The purpose of duct leakage testing is to evaluate how well a home&#8217;s duct system can hold air. The idea behind it is that the more air that leaks out of the duct system, the more potential energy loss can occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Because of this, a pressure test is performed on the duct system itself to determine if the duct system is meeting the standards of today&#8217;s building codes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Most CO municipalities have now adopted the <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/codes.iccsafe.org\/content\/IECC2018P5\/chapter-4-re-residential-energy-efficiency#IECC2018P5_RE_Ch04_SecR403.3.3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 IECC<\/a> or the <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/codes.iccsafe.org\/content\/IECC2021P2\/chapter-4-re-residential-energy-efficiency#IECC2021P2_RE_Ch04_SecR403.3.5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021 IECC<\/a>. <em><strong>The 2018 IECC code is stated as follows:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<h3 data-fontsize=\"24\" data-lineheight=\"36\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Ducts shall be pressure tested to determine air leakage by either of the following:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Rough-in test:<\/strong> Total leakage measured with a pressure differential of 0.1 inch w.g. (25 Pa) across the system including manufacturer\u2019s air handler enclosure \u2013 <em>All registers taped or otherwise sealed<\/em> \u2013<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Post-construction test:<\/strong> Total leakage measured with a pressure differential of 0.1 inch w.g. (25 Pa) across the entire system including manufacturer\u2019s air handler enclosure \u2013 <em>All registers taped or otherwise sealed<\/em> \u2013<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Exception:<\/strong> A duct air leakage test shall not be required where ducts and air handlers are located entirely within the building thermal envelope.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The 2021 IECC is similar to the 2018 IECC <em>except\u00a0<\/em>that it also requires duct leakage testing within the building thermal envelope.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-3 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-background-blend-mode:overlay;--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-padding-top:25px;--awb-padding-right:25px;--awb-padding-left:25px;--awb-background-color:#333333;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-5 fusion_builder_column_1_2 1_2 fusion-one-half fusion-column-first\" style=\"--awb-bg-blend:overlay;--awb-bg-size:cover;width:50%;width:calc(50% - ( ( 4% ) * 0.5 ) );margin-right: 4%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><h1 id=\"Testing\" class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"--fontsize: 36; line-height: 1.4; color: #ffffff;\" data-fontsize=\"36\" data-lineheight=\"50.4px\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">How a Duct Leakage Test Works:<\/span><\/h1>\n<p style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">First of all, you need to check the current code in your building jurisdiction. If its a IECC 2021 code, all duct systems must be tested <em>inside and out<\/em> of the conditioned space. If you are on the IECC 2018 or earlier, duct testing is only required when parts of the HVAC system are outside of the conditioned envelope. This includes areas like unconditioned attics, garages, and crawlspaces. If any supply or return duct chases, flexible lines or air handler units are in these areas, by IECC 2015 code, a duct leakage test is required. If a crawlspace is conditioned, then no test is required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">A duct leakage test (duct testing) can be performed at rough-in before drywalling, or post-construction. In both cases, the requirements are the same. The system will need to achieve a leakage rate of less than 4 CFM (cubic feet per minute) per 100 square feet of the home. Here is an example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><em>40 CFM moving through the ducts when put under pressure.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><em>1000 sqft house.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><em>38CFM \/ 1000sqft = 0.38 x 100 sqft = <strong>3.8 CFM<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><em>This is commonly referred to as a 4% leakage rat<\/em>e.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" style=\"--fontsize: 26; line-height: 1.5; --minfontsize: 26; color: #ffffff;\" data-fontsize=\"26\" data-lineheight=\"39px\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Duct Testing Process:<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Testing the ducts requires sealing all the openings of a duct system. This includes all supply and return registers. We do this by using large HVAC tape to cover and seal the openings. This process can take some time as we try to create the best seal possible. Our fan is then sealed to the air handler or a large return opening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">The fan is run to depressurize the duct system to -25 pascals. The amount of air moving through our fan is then measured. The number generated under 25 pascals of pressure is known as CFM@25. Minimizing these junctions, especially in attics, can be very helpful.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Use extra &#8220;pookie&#8221; around the edges of chase boxes and corners.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Heavily seal around the air handler. We commonly see poorly sealed ducts around the back of the furnace.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Have an airtight system for the filter slot.
