{"id":19370,"date":"2022-03-01T15:04:57","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T22:04:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/?p=19370"},"modified":"2023-05-23T16:32:50","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T22:32:50","slug":"iecc-2021-and-the-city-of-louisvilles-adoption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/iecc-2021-and-the-city-of-louisvilles-adoption\/","title":{"rendered":"IECC 2021 and the City of Louisville&#8217;s Adoption"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 fusion-flex-container nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"max-width:1144px;margin-left: calc(-4% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:0px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><h3>City of Louisville adopts IECC 2021 and its Net Zero Appendix<\/h3>\n<p>The latest and most challenging energy codes have been released by the International Code Council and their IECC 2021 codes.\u00a0 While the vast majority of Colorado\u2019s Cities and Counties have adopted one iteration of the IECC or another, ranging from IECC 2009 to IECC 2018, the City of Louisville took the plunge and adopted the IECC 2021 in November of this past year in addition to a net zero appendix.<\/p>\n<p>Like the IECC codes that came before it, the 2021 iteration of the code allows for several pathways for compliance including a performance pathway, but we\u2019d like to focus on the prescriptive pathway for the purposes of this article.<\/p>\n<p>The IECC 2021 prescriptive pathway through the code includes increased insulation levels throughout the building to ensure a very high performing thermal envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Under this code, attic insulation levels are now required to achieve R-60, while above-grade walls assemblies are given one of four options: either R-30 in the cavity with no continuous exterior requirement; R-20 with an R-5 continuous insulation;\u00a0 an R-13 with an R-10 continuous insulation; or no cavity insulation but an R-20 continuous.<\/p>\n<p>The IECC 2021 also adds a requirement for an \u201cadditional efficiency package\u201d to be selected from a list (found in R408). The code makes efforts to define air sealing requirements, but blower door testing requirements do not change from 3 ACH for climate zone 5.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-22-at-9.33.59-AM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19469 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-22-at-9.33.59-AM-230x300.png\" alt=\"IECC 2021\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-22-at-9.33.59-AM-200x261.png 200w, https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-22-at-9.33.59-AM-230x300.png 230w, https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-22-at-9.33.59-AM-400x522.png 400w, https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-22-at-9.33.59-AM-600x783.png 600w, https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Screen-Shot-2022-02-22-at-9.33.59-AM.png 614w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Code Picture for Climate Zone 5<\/h3>\n<p>Under the IECC 2021, <em>duct leakage testing becomes mandatory<\/em> for all duct systems regardless of whether they are completely within the thermal envelope. \u00a0Duct leakage tests that are entirely within the envelope are allowed up to 8% leakage, while systems that are partially outside of the envelope will be required to achieve 4% or lower.<\/p>\n<p>The IECC 2021 prescriptive code does not require balanced mechanical ventilation for climate zone 5, but does introduce water piping insulation requirements.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/joe-dl.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-18423 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/joe-dl-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"IECC 2021\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/joe-dl-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/joe-dl-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/joe-dl-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/joe-dl-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/joe-dl-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/joe-dl-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/joe-dl-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/joe-dl-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/joe-dl.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>So what did Louisville adopt exactly?<\/h3>\n<p>In addition to adopting the IECC 2021 energy code, the City of Louisville <a href=\"https:\/\/www.louisvilleco.gov\/local-government\/government\/departments\/building-safety\/permit-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adopted<\/a> \u201cAppendix RC Zero Energy Residential Building Provisions\u201d\u00a0 This relatively small addition to the energy code introduces quite a substantial change for new home builds in Louisville.<\/p>\n<p>Any new construction projects <em>will be required to achieve a net zero score<\/em> with an energy rating index (HERS rating). This alone might be considered quite a step up in the code, but the somewhat obscure requirement that these houses must first achieve a score of 47, before any renewables, represents a monumental shift in building design.<\/p>\n<p>Achieving these sub 50 scores for new construction homes will require much more than even the IECC 2021 code mandates.\u00a0 Preliminary models on concept homes that we have built to explore these upgrade options suggest that compliance with this code will be possible only with very tight (less than 1 ACH) envelopes, minimal glazing areas, and even the possibility of geo thermal heating and cooling system requirements.<\/p>\n<h3>Other IECC 2021 Adoption<\/h3>\n<p>The 2021 IECC energy code will be adopted more in Colorado.\u00a0 Other areas that have adopted it already include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.larimer.org\/building\/2021-building-codes-are-coming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Larimer County<\/a>.\u00a0 Denver and other municipalities are reviewing the 2021 codes.<\/p>\n<p>The increased insulation levels, particularly in the ceiling and attic, along with the mandatory duct leakage testing requirements will make compliance with the 2021 IECC more difficult in Colorado.\u00a0 The results will continue to be increased energy efficiency in new construction homes.<\/p>\n<p>Scott Home Inspection has been offering <a href=\"https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/energy-services\/\">energy code compliance services<\/a> to architects and builders in Colorado for over 15 years.\u00a0 Especially with the introduction of COBECC 2020 (the City of Boulder&#8217;s latest energy code which also has net zero requirements) we have a great deal of understanding for which features and specifications will be needed in a home to achieve compliance no matter the area that your home is being built.\u00a0 We would be glad to have a conversation about your project!<\/p>\n<h4>More Information:<\/h4>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.louisvilleco.gov\/living-in-louisville\/residents\/marshall-fire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marshall Fire Updates<\/a><\/h4>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/codes.iccsafe.org\/content\/IECC2021P2\/chapter-4-re-residential-energy-efficiency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IECC 2021 Standard<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":18,"featured_media":19487,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[54],"tags":[5156,5155],"class_list":["post-19370","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-energy-code-info","tag-city-of-louisville","tag-iecc2021"],"nelio_content":{"autoShareEndMode":"never","automationSources":{"useCustomSentences":false,"customSentences":[]},"efiAlt":"","efiUrl":"","followers":[2,18],"highlights":[],"isAutoShareEnabled":true,"networkImageIds":[],"permalinkQueryArgs":[],"series":[],"suggestedReferences":[]},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v18.1 (Yoast SEO v27.2) -
