When it comes to newly built homes, everything from the building envelope to the HVAC must adhere to regulations established by the <a href=\"https:\/\/codes.iccsafe.org\/content\/IECC2021P1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IECC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As an <a href=\"https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/energy-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">energy services<\/a> company we are well-versed in all the aspects related to energy code. However, in this article, we will put the microscope on HVAC systems in new builds, and what it takes to meet code compliance.<\/p>\n<p>If you are involved in the building process, you have likely heard the terms <em>Manual J, Manual S, Manual D or all together Manual JSD.<\/em> These are different standards, put in place by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acca.org\/standards\/technical-manuals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA)<\/a> that are used to calculate IECC-compliant HVAC design.<\/p>\n<p>Each manual deals with a different aspect of the system, and they work together to ensure that the system is properly sized and installed to meet the needs of the building. This step uses a series of calculations to determine a building&#8217;s heating and cooling load.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>FYI: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basix.nsw.gov.au\/iframe\/thermal-help\/heating-and-cooling-loads.html#:~:text=The%20heating%20load%20is%20the,temperature%20in%20an%20acceptable%20range.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The heating load<\/a> is the amount of heat energy that would need to be added to a space to maintain the temperature in an acceptable range. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basix.nsw.gov.au\/iframe\/thermal-help\/heating-and-cooling-loads.html#:~:text=The%20heating%20load%20is%20the,temperature%20in%20an%20acceptable%20range.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The cooling load<\/a> is the amount of heat energy that would need to be removed from a space (cooling) to maintain the temperature in an acceptable range.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Manual J is able to make an accurate assessment by analyzing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bradleymechanicalva.com\/learn\/manual-j-s-d-t\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">certain factors<\/a> such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Size and orientation of the building<\/li>\n<li>Type and number of windows and doors<\/li>\n<li>Insulation levels<\/li>\n<li>Lights and appliances<\/li>\n<li>Climate zone<\/li>\n<li>Number of occupants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is Manual S?<\/h2>\n<p>So now that you have made all the proper load calculations with Manual J, what&#8217;s next? It&#8217;s time to move on to <a href=\"https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/manual-j\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manual S.<\/a> This standard is utilized to determine and <em>select<\/em> the proper HVAC equipment needed in a given residence.<\/p>\n<p>Manual S considers factors such as the size, efficiency, and capacity of the equipment. This is an integral part of the process when determining ductwork design.<\/p>\n<p>Manual D utilizes the findings yielded from Manual J (heating\/cooling load) and S (system material). It also analyzes <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hansbergerrefrig.com\/2016\/04\/07\/manuals-s-d-and-j\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other factors,<\/a> including the static pressure in every room, the friction rate, the location of the air handler, and the distance between each <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Register_(air_and_heating)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">register.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Why Are Manual J, S, and D Reports So Important?<\/h2>\n<p>So, why is it so important to make all these evaluations? For starters, it might actually be <em>required<\/em> in your region. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energycodes.gov\/state-portal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">majority of the country<\/a> has adopted the IECC building code, which (as stated above) does require <a href=\"https:\/\/scotthomeinspection.com\/manual-j\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manual J\/S or Manual J\/S\/D<\/a> evaluations and reports for new residential building projects. So be sure to meet all of your code requirements for your building permits!<\/p>\n<p>But let&#8217;s set all that &#8220;code talk&#8221; aside now.
